Assyrian
Monitor for Human Rights was informed that another atrocity has been committed
in Aleppo. The important personal library of the kidnapped metropolitan Yohanna
Ibrahim was bombed recently in the Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox in
Aleppo. Mortar shells targeted the library and damaged most of its contents.
The Bishop, who was kidnapped on April 22, 2013, had
carefully collected throughout his lifetime many valuable books and
manuscripts. The library contained more than 18,000 volumes. Most of the books
were in the Syriac language and were about Syriac literature, heritage and
culture. In addition it contained a large number of ancient manuscripts and
reference works.
We
would like to bring the attention of the international community to this issue and
urge it to do more to save the world heritage in the region, including
libraries, churches, antiquities and museums.
